Now that we are a little older, we might be in a position where we have to introduce periods to our daughters, little sisters, friends, or even strangers! This time, let’s do it right! Let’s talk more openly, encourage questions, and banish the shame that comes with periods. Whether you’re reading this to explain periods to someone else, or are here to learn about periods yourself- here are some things for beginners to know about periods:
1. What’s Happening To You is Completely Normal!
Millions of people menstruate, so you have nothing to worry about. Periods are a biological process that indicates that a female has reached a stage where she can now reproduce.
2. Understand the Timeline
Take a look at this post from Azah to understand the timeline of your menstrual cycle! Your periods may not be very regular at the start and that’s completely normal. After a few cycles, you’ll be able to gauge how heavy your flow is, how long your period lasts (usually 5-7 days), and how frequent they are (usually 4-5 weeks)
3. PMS Sucks. But you’ll get through it!
The bad news is that periods are often accompanied by a barrage of unpleasant symptoms like moodiness, fatigue, low-energy, painful cramps, headaches, and many more. Every person experiences these symptoms in different ways. The good news is that there are many ways to deal with them! Eating a healthy diet, exercising frequently, and practicing meditation are a few ways you can stay balanced and calm on those days.
4. Welcome to The World of Sanitary Products
Pads, Tampons, Menstrual Cups- there’s loads of sanitary products you can try but don’t be overwhelmed. Most people start with pads when they start menstruating (and most stick with them). Be sure to use pads that are soft, organic, and free of harmful chemicals (like Azah pads!) that prevent rashes and irritation.
5. Talk to People if you have Questions!
Talk to your friends, your elder siblings, your parents, relatives- whoever you feel comfortable with! It is always better to share your doubts in a safe space than to remain confused and misinformed for years! If you don’t have anyone you can safely talk to, try to find some resources on the internet that can help you. There are a countless number of articles on the internet to answer your questions.
If we teach our little girls this message, we will be raising strong, resilient women who never question their worth. Let’s vow to rise together to a period positive future!
